The sense of smell has played a vital role in human lives since the beginning of time. It is essential for emotional development and impacts our everyday lives and memories

Scent connects us with nature, the people around us, our homes, our food and adds a special dimension to every moment. The smell of a fresh cup of coffee, the skin of our children after their bath, or the lingering smell of crisp linen and bed sheets after a hard day; all are precious moments anchored by the power of fragrance. Scents are ubiquitous. They are integral to our memories that are permanently imprinted. But what role does smell play when it comes to cleanliness and hygiene?
Hygiene & human perception
What is the perception of hygiene? The answer is – when I feel clean and safe around me. What makes you feel clean and safe? The answer usually is – smells like bleach, chlorine, washed laundry, cleaned and sanitized hands.

For some people, the perception of hygiene is purely visual; a clean and tidy place, even if there is no smell or scent associated with it. For others, the opposite applies. Smell plays a reassuring role, even if the surroundings are untidy and messy.
Consumers’ requirements for hygienic products
Manufacturers are striving to develop products that provide reassuring sensations of hygiene, cleanliness and safety. Consumers are becoming educated, and they require transparency about their product’s efficacy. Additionally, consumers are now showing interest towards diverse fragrances such as fresh, leafy and natural-smelling ingredients like herbs and flowers. Similarly, millennial mothers are concerned about the well-being of their children. They want hygienic products that are safe and gentle, they look for an emotional and caring touch.
Defining the smell of hygiene for modern cleaning products
There is a certain functional quality to scents that convey hygiene. For many of us, the smell of bleach, despite being unpleasant, remains a reassuring factor of a “job well done”. For others, it could be citrus, pine, aromatics or even florals! Fragrance influences consumer choices in cleanliness and hygiene products, especially in the light of recent advances and diversification in health and wellness, and the requirements for sustainability.

The future of hygiene
Post Covid-19, we will all be living in a different world. Every single person on the planet
has shared the same feeling of fear, isolation and helplessness. However, we have also seen people pull together in extraordinary ways to support complete strangers, often on the other side of the world. The flourishing of humanity on a global scale, along with a realisation of what really matters in life – people, time, nature, health, happiness – will drive the long-term sustainable story going forward. We are all now impatient for big changes.
